Qualified interpreters provide a critical link in the educational system for teachers, as well as deaf and hard of hearing students. This four year degree program is designed to provide students with interpreting and transliterating skills, in depth knowledge of the field, and an understanding of the interpreter’s role within the school system. This program provides students with field labs, practicum's, and internships within local public school settings. In addition, at the conclusion of the program, students will qualify to take state and national evaluations for interpreter proficiency.

Students who successfully complete the program in Educational Interpreting at Valdosta State University will earn a Bachelor of Science degree. Completion of the program requires competency as established through an evaluation by the Georgia Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (GRID) for a Quality Assurance (QA) rating, or by Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) for national certification.

The Educational Interpreting program is housed in the Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders within the College of Education at Valdosta State University. The Department offers undergraduate programs in Special Education (deaf education, mild disabilities, mental retardation, interrelated special education/early childhood) communication disorders, educational interpreting, and master’s degree preparation in Special Education (deaf education, mild disabilities, mental retardation, and early childhood special education), & Speech Language Pathology.

Those students seeking admission to the program must have a GPA of 2.5 or better, complete a criminal background check and have verification of professional liability insurance. Students must also complete COMD 2110, American Sign Language I and COMD 2120, American Sign Language II prior to beginning their course of study. Both courses (COMD 2110 and COMD 2120) are ONLY offered during the summer.
