Considering AT

When considering assistive technology for a young child, think about the following:
  1. To make for easier communication, does the child need:
    • the ability to have speech output to say things;
    • to receive information in a multimedia fashion (pictures, animation, objects, etc.); or
    • alternative choice-making systems?

  2. For accomplishing self-care tasks such as eating, toileting, and dressing, does the child need:
    • adaptive or alternative tools;
    • the ability to signal for help; or
    • alternative choice-making systems?

  3. For easier mobility, does the child need:
    • alternative ways to move independently; or
    • outside supports for stability?

  4. To grow intellectually, does the child need:
    • alternative choice-making systems;
    • alternative ways to ask for, get, and organize information;
    • alternative ways to share and organize information (show what he/she knows); or
    • alternative ways to investigate and experiment with his/her environment (understanding cause and effect)?

  5. In order to play like other children, does the child need:
    • adapted toys;
    • adapted toy activation methods;
    • outside supports for stability; or
    • alternative choice-making systems?

  6. To get opportunities for socialization, does the child need:
    • alternative ways to communication with his/her peers during the activities;
    • outside supports for stability within typical positions for activities; or
    • alternative choice-making systems.
