Accommodation Game - Round 1

Study the low-tech accommodations on the right and then choose the solutions that will help in each scenarios on the left.  Check your answers by moving your mouse over the answer button. To try more scenarios click on Round 2 or 3 above.

Senario Accommodation

1. Child has cerebral palsy and has difficulty controlling his/her arm movements and is constantly knocking things off table or high chair tray.

List all the accommodations that might help this child in the box below.

Stabilization
1. Stabilize objects with a non-slip surface such as rug grip
2. Tether objects to the high chair
3. Use Velcro fasteners to help with holding objects together
4. Use mounting/stabilizing system for objects such as communication devices
5. Use plates and cups that are adapted to not slide or drip

Object customization
6. Adapt battery-powered toys so that they can be activated with a switch
7. Adapt pages of books to make them stiff and easy to turn
8. Build up handles for easier holding.
9. Raise or accentuate edges or flat surfaces to raise the border for easier placement
10. Use straps around handles to assist grasping, holding
11. Add Velcro to make clothing open and close easier

Mobility Accommodations
12. Use low benches for floor activities to assist with support in sitting.
13. Use fences made out of books to reduce reach area.
14. Use bean bags, corner chairs for quick, mobile supports for balance when sitting.
15. Add weighted objects to walkers to walk behind and push.
16. Add weight to furniture to keep it from turning over when child pulls up or climbs on
17. Use weighted ride-on toys to keep them from falling over easily

Communication Accommodations
18. Use choice board system for pointing/selecting
19. Use eye gaze frame for attaching objects and pictures
20. Use a single/multiple message device with speech output (such as expressing "more")
21. Create a signaling system (buzzer, bell, recorded voice) for indicating needs and wants
22.  Use a switch with a simple AAC device
23. Record child voice on a tape recorder for common commands and reactions and provide a way to activate recording

Visual Accommodations
24. Backlight object to accentuate objects use textured surfaces (rug grip, Velcro) for locating objects
25. Customize lighting in room (dim background lights, use color lights)
26.  Pair light, vibration, or toy action with activation of a switch
27. Add sound to help with locating objects visually.
