Institutional Planning Committee (IPC)
Minutes
Dr. Richard Schmertzing, chair,
called the meeting to order at
Dr. Schmertzing noted that the main topic of discussion this year has been the charge of the committee. Committee members have decided not to recommend disbanding the committee.
There was a general discussion of the upcoming efforts to update the VSU Statutes. The committee discussed the charge of the IPC. Dr. Noll suggested a more pro-active role for the IPC.
There was a discussion of whether or not the IPC can only take up issues as referred by the Executive Committee of the Faculty Senate.
There was a discussion of how to integrate the IPC into the planning process at VSU. Dr. Noll suggested that the chair of the IPC could serve as a member on the recently created University Council.
There was a discussion of the committee’s charge. Dr. Krotseng suggested a conversation with the Executive Committee of the Faculty Senate concerning the IPC’s charge. Dr. Schmertzing expressed concern that the charge is not meaningful. Several of the committee members noted that the principal charge of the committee to review policies is fulfilled by the University Council. Committee members suggested a conversation with President Zaccari concerning the appropriate role for the IPC in university planning.
Dr. Schmertzing noted that he visited with Betty Derrick, former faculty member in Chemistry and faculty senator, about the history of the Institutional Planning Committee.
Dr. Schmertzing noted that he will seek clarification from the Executive Committee of the Faculty Senate in terms of how issues can reach the IPC.
For the Fall 2006 semester, the committee members suggested efforts to connect the IPC to university planning and refine the committee’s charge.
