Suggested Timelines for Induction Activities

Sample Program Structure
This sample structure is intended to provide ideas and guidance for school systems developing induction programs.

Year One

  • Simulated classroom experience for first-time teachers, four days the week before pre-planning days

  • Simulated classroom experience for experienced teachers new to the district two days the week before pre-planning days

  • NOTE: Experienced teachers new to the system receive two days of initial induction.  After that, they may attend any of the other sessions during the process based upon principal requests.  Also, all teachers new to the system are assigned a mentor for one full year.

    • Topics for the experience are presented in a classroom simulation and are taught by classroom teachers (the presenters who will be the mentors) to the students (who are the inductees) and are taught by modeling.   Topics include:

      • Classroom management

      • Lesson planning

      • Instructional strategies

      • Discipline

      • Local policies and procedures

      • Time management

      • Working with parents

      • Accommodating individual differences

  • One day of training for administrators in the summer

  • Two days training in September for late hires

  • Three days of further training during the year for first-time teachers: one in October, one in January, one in April (topics similar to those before school started, review and real life examples)

  • Mentor training: three days the week before pre-planning days, one day in January

  • New teacher support group meetings: once a month for nine months

  • Informal observations of new teachers: four by mentor and two by induction coordinator (or administrator)

  • One day of visits by inductees to demonstration classrooms

Year Two

  • Training one day the week before pre-planning week

  • Three days of further training during the year: one in October, one in January, one in April

    • Content of training includes review of some first year topics, plus effective teaching, use of case studies as examples, phases of teaching, authentic assessment, preparing for high stakes testing, homework solutions, and new teacher concerns/classroom experiences

  • Second-year teachers support group meetings: once a month for nine months

  • Informal observations: four by mentor and two by induction coordinator (or administrator)

  • One-half day of visits to demonstration classrooms by inductees

Year Three

  • Four half-days of training during the year: one in September, One in November, one in January, one in March (graduation ceremony)

    • Content includes management, effective teaching, case studies of tough situations, questioning techniques, strategies for teaching differently, and teacher experiences

  • Informal observations: two by induction coordinator (or administrator)
