Student Teaching Placement Process

Policy Statement: Recommendations for student teaching placement shall be made by the departmental External Placement and Site Development Committee. Mentor teachers shall be selected based on nomination by a university faculty member or a school system Director of Special Education. Mentor teachers must be certified in the student teacher’s speciality area and have a minimum of three years teaching experience.

 

Recommendation Procedure: Recommended student teacher placements are made for committee approved sites only. The student teacher is asked to submit to the committee, his/her choice of student age level and disability level and also the preferred geographic area. Students are asked to request placement with the type of students they eventually wish to teach. Every effort is made to match the recommended placement with the student’s requests. Recommendations are sent to the Assistant Dean, Office of Student Services of the College of Education (referred to as Office of Professional Laboratory Experiences in other documents). Placement arrangements are finalized there.

Through Spring, 1999, students were finishing the old program which resulted in a BS. Ed. and certification in Mental Retardation. The Grade/Subject column indicates the disability level of the students in the classroom where student teaching occurred. Student teaching under the old program was one quarter rather than two semesters.

For reasons of confidentiality the names of student teachers and their mentors have been removed from this modified folio.
