    PHYSICAL MANAGEMENT PROCEDURES FOR
    INDIVIDUALS WITH SEVERE DISABILITIES

      COURSE DESCRIPTION

      Prerequisites: SPEC 3010 and SPEC 4010.

      A study of physical management procedures necessary for individuals with significant physical disabilities. Emphasis is placed on techniques of handling, positioning, and feeding of these persons.

      COLLEGE OF EDUCATION CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK PRINCIPLES

      The following College of Education Conceptual Framework Principles will be addressed in this course:

      Principle 2: The teacher understands how children learn and develop and provides learning opportunities that support their intellectual, communication, academic, social, motor, vocational and/or adaptive development.

      EDUCATIONAL OUTCOMES

      At the conclusion of this course students will demonstrate the ability to:

      1. describe methods of positioning and handling persons with severe physical disabilities.

      2. describe methods of feeding persons with severe physical disabilities (Principle 2)

    • describe the uses of orthotic, prosthetic and adaptive equipment (Principle 2)
    • describe medical complications and implications for studentsŐ support needs, including seizure management, tube feeding, CIC, and CPR (Principle 2)
    • COURSE OBJECTIVES

      At the conclusion of this course, students will:

      1. describe methods of positioning and handling persons with severe physical disabilities.

      2. describe methods of feeding persons with severe physical disabilities (Principle 2, Objective 2)

      3. describe the uses of orthotic, prosthetic and adaptive equipment (Principle 2, Objective 3)

      COURSE ACTIVITIES/ASSIGNMENTS/REQUIREMENTS

      Professional performance in written and oral expression will be expected in all activities.

      Errors in that performance will be penalized and result in lowered grades.

    Developing Professionals for Service

      1. Students will successfully complete 2 exams and a comprehensive final exam (Objectives 1, 2 & 3)

      2. Students will complete a survey of teachers regarding use of orthotic, prosthetic and adaptive equipment and handling, positioning and feeding strategies (Objective 1, 2 & 3)

      Performance assessment instruments will be provided to students describing specific requirements for activity 2.

      The Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders has a policy statement on plagiarism and a document identifying the characteristics of plagiarized work and the penalties for such actions. The penalty for plagiarism in undergraduate course work is a zero (0) on the assignment for the first offense, for the second offense the consequence is a letter grade of "F" for the course, for the third offense a letter grade of "F" for the course as well as further appropriate action involving referral of the matter to the appropriate university officials within the administrative structure. For graduate work, a letter grade of "F" for the course will be given for the first offense and a letter grade of "F" for the course as well as further appropriate action involving referral of the matter to the appropriate university officials within the administrative structure will occur for the second offense.
