COURSE DESCRIPTION

Reviewed are the major statutes and litigation affecting educational and educational-related areas as well as ethical decision-making practices. Emphasized is information about professional ethics and behavior appropriate to educational and educationally related settings.

COLLEGE OF EDUCATION CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK PRINCIPLES

SPECIFIC COURSE OUTCOMES

Educators will

  1. Understand the theoretical foundations of applied ethics.
  2. Appreciate the relationship between the concept of a public trust and the responsibilities of a professional relationship.
  3. Be able to compare and contrast the nature of ethical rules governing educators and other professionals.
  4. Identify the statutory authority underlying Georgia’s Professional Standards Commission and Professional Practices Commission.
  5. Understand the mission and responsibilities of the Professional Practices commission.
  6. Be aware of the provisions of different codes of ethics for educators.
  7. Understand how the Code of Standard applies to actual situations involving Georgia educators.
  8. Be able to relate the various provisions of the Code of Standards, as applied, to broad ethical principles and to the canons of the Code of Ethics.

ATTENDANCE POLICY

Two points will be deducted for each hour a student is late to class, ten points for each class missed, and two points for each calendar day an assignment is late. Students who miss 20% or more of the classes are subject to dismissal from the course. After missing a second class, you must schedule an appointment with the professor to discuss your continuation in the course.

SPECIAL NEEDS STATEMENT

Students requiring classroom accommodations or modifications because of a documented disability should discuss this need with the professor at the beginning of the quarter.
