Course Description

This course is designed to examine the basic fundamentals of personal first aid. The principles and philosophy underlying safety education in the home, school, and community are emphasized.

Principle 8: The teacher understands and uses formal and informal assessment strategies to evaluate and ensure the continuous intellectual, social and physical development of the learner.

Course Objectives

Through lecture, demonstration, individual assignments, and regular participation, students should be able to:

    1. The student will administer mouth to mouth resuscitation and perform compressions of a victim (adult, child, infant) who is not breathing.
    2. The student will perform first aid skills in bandaging, splinting, dressings, applying direct pressure, primary and secondary survey skills, and transportation.
    3. The student will list the proper care procedures for hemorrhaging, wounds, shock, head injuries, spine injuries, chest injuries, abdomen injuries, poisoning, drugs, diabetes, burns, heat and cold emergencies.
    4. The student will be able to list a variety of safety education programs for the home, school and community.

Course Requirements

    1. Attendance & Participation
    2. Students are expected to attend and actively participate in order to successfully fulfill the course requirements. Students who do not work diligently during class will not receive credit for active participation. Two (2) personal days will be allotted for illness or personal emergencies. For that reason, NO makeup days will be given and there are NO excused absences.

      0-2 Absences = 100 points
      3 Absences = 80 points
      4 Absences = 70 points
      5 Absences = 60 points
      6 Absences = 50 points
      7 or more absences will result in an "F" in the course

      Note: Tardies do count against you! Every 2 tardies will result in 1 absence. It is your responsibility to notify the instructor at the end of class if you enter class late.

Evaluation

Attendance & Participation 10%
Practical CPR Exam 20%
Written CPR Exam 25%
Written First Aid Exam 45%

Grading Scale

A = 90 – 100
B = 80 – 89
C = 70 – 79
D = 60 – 69
F = 59 or below

NOTE: The instructor of this course reserves the privilege to add or delete educational experiences or topics other than the listed test, projects and topics, depending upon the progress and ability of the students in the class.
