How Areas of Specialization Differ from CEC Guidelines
Common Core Curriculum Standards:
Our common core curriculum did not differ from these guidelines.
Mild Disabilities/Individualized General Curriculum Standards:
Several standards on this matrix are not addressed because they were originally taken from the lists of standards for students with physical and health disabilities (PH), students with visual impairments (VI), or students who are deaf or hard of hearing (DH). Upon completion of the mild disabilities program, preservice teachers will be eligible to receive certification in Interrelated, which enables them to teach students with learning disabilities, emotional/behavioral disorders, and mild mental retardation. Our program does not include preparation for certification in PH, VI, or DH. Therefore, these standards were not addressed.
Severe Disabilities/Mental Retardation/Developmental Disabilities Curriculum Standards:
Although the severe disabilities program is designed to be non-categorical, after inspection of the Individualized Independence Curriculum Referenced Standards, it was determined that content of our program encompassed more closely the standards from the area of Mental Retardation/Developmental Disabilities. Also, upon completion of this program preservice teachers are eligible for certification in the area of Mental Retardation.
Early Childhood Special Education Curriculum Standards:
Our Early Intervention/Early Childhood SPE curriculum did not differ from these guidelines.
