Purpose of the Lesson
The purpose of this lesson is to introduce students to decision-making processes used in curriculum development.  Special focus is placed on strategic planning, the Tyler Rational, and scope, sequence, and balance.

It is critical that you read the assigned chapter and complete any prerequisite readings prior to completing the assignments or exam question(s) for this lesson.

Readings
Chapter 3 of the text.  Thoroughly read pp. 43-53.  You can simply scan the remainder of the chapter.

Other Prerequisite Activities
If you can get your hands on Supervision for Today's Schools by Peter F. Oliva, read over the section on "Continuing Problems of Curriculum Development".  In the third edition, this begins on page 286.  This section includes scope, sequence, and balance, along with a good description of Tyler's Rationale.  This is the text used in ACED 7530--Supervision of Adult and Career Education Programs.
